Systems Supervisor

Who are we? PrairieCat is intergovernmental organization that maintains an online integrated library system known as PrarieCat for 138 libraries in Illinois. This includes one million titles of books, periodicals, cassettes, videos, CDs, DVDs, electronic resources and other library materials. The libraries in our membership share the cost of central site equipment, computer and database maintenance, staff, and telecommunications.  We support this system for libraries of all sizes including public, academic, school and special. What is the opportunity? The Systems Supervisor is responsible for oversight of the operation of all PrairieCat hardware, software, reporting, telecommunications, and network infrastructure. This position leads the Systems team and works closely with staff and members to ensure effective support and continuity of PrairieCat services.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Schedule, train, supervise, evaluate, and participate in the hiring of direct reports.
  • Proactively seek out and oversee the procurement, development, implementation, and evaluation of new technology services.
  • Oversee and carry out strong project management practices throughout the life cycle of special projects, including initiation, planning, execution, controls, closing.
  • Provide leadership in PrairieCat governance, user group, and/or committee meetings. 
  • Ensure network connectivity between remote libraries and PrairieCat servers.
  • Ensure the proper handling of data security issues.
  • Oversee hardware maintenance, upgrades, troubleshooting, and support.  Monitor same when provided by outside hosting facilities or vendors. 
  • Work closely with outside vendors or hosting facilities to maintain proper operations, security, and connectivity for membership.
  • Oversee regular backups and offsite storage of PrairieCat data for on-premise equipment.
  • Collaborate with PrairieCat and member library staff on the efficient and effective implementation of software, hardware, and other PrairieCat operations.
  • Performs other duties as necessary

 What qualifications are needed?

Education: BA/BS required.  Computer Science-related Masters or IT certifications added plus. 

Experience, Key Skills and Abilities: 

  • 3 years in library technology and experience with integrated library systems preferred
  • Demonstrated knowledge of computer hardware and software
  • Experience troubleshooting and maintaining Windows and Linux environments and operating systems 
  • Experience with telecommunications infrastructure planning and maintenance
  • Experience working with Microsoft server in an Enterprise environment, including Active Directory experience
  • Experience working with integrated library systems preferred, including configuration and reporting modules of such systems
  • Knowledge and experience working with VMWare or other virtualized server software
  • Experience with PC hardware and software installation, deployment and maintenance, including disc imaging and remote maintenance tools
  • Experience and knowledge with best practices regarding network, server and endpoint security (anti-virus/anti-malware deployments, IDS/IPS deployments, SSL, etc.), in an Enterprise environment, and ability to advise regarding such

Work Location and hours: 

Remote with very limited rotating on-call schedule and in-office work - in-person office locations are in either Bolingbrook or Coal Valley, IL.
