Cataloging & Database Management

PrairieCat aims to satisfy library and consortium needs through system support and library customization.

Circulation Settings and Support

PrairieCat staff regularly make setting changes in Sierra to match member library circulation policies. Setting changes may include adding new patron types, adding rules to begin using an item type, loan rule changes, fine changes, limits by format and more. Always request a setting change before beginning to use an item type not previously used at your library.

Member library staff should submit a Help Desk ticket to request circulation settings changes.

Database Maintenance

PrairieCat staff offer various member services to help maintain the PrairieCat bibliographic database. This includes loading new bibliographic records as requested, making corrections to bibliographic or volume records and merging duplicate records.

For request forms to merge duplicate records, correct records, and other database maintenance tasks, see Webforms: Cataloging/Technical Services.

Original Cataloging Services

PrairieCat members are entitled to free original and copy cataloging completed by PrairieCat Catalogers as part of PrairieCat membership benefits. The PrairieCat catalogers function as an extension of your Technical Services Department to help with backlogs, unfamiliar formats or modern European language materials.  PrairieCat  catalogers will provide upfront original OCLC cataloging of English- and Romance-language items in all formats to PrairieCat members, They offer quality original cataloging for books, videos, DVDs, compact discs, spoken and musical sound records, digital/MP3 recordings, electronic resources, serials, maps, computer software, CD-ROMs, realia, micro-film, genealogy materials and more.

OCLC Membership & Batchloading

Because the PrairieCat database is built from OCLC records, OCLC membership is required of all PrairieCat members.
