PrairieCat has been connecting member libraries for 20 years. The membership has grown and changed during the past 20 years, but the strong commitment to resource sharing effectively and equitably has remained.
PrairieCat currently supports 136 member libraries, including public, school, and academic libraries. Members share an integrated library system, Sierra from Innovative, to provide automation for daily library operations including circulation, cataloging, reporting, and more. End users have access to more than 5 million items through the shared catalog.
In FY26, members across 22 counties in Illinois:
- Circulated 4,532,630 items
- Filled 658,240 interlibrary holds
- Completed 639,220 reciprocal borrowing transactions
PrairieCat was formed in 2006 by the merger of HAL, NILSCatT and Quad-LINC. Some of the former NIC libraries also migrated to PrairieCat at that time, along with a group of previously standalone libraries. PrairieCat was originally on a SirsiDynix Symphony system using IBistro for the public catalog; PrairieCat went live on SirsiDynix with 193 members. PrairieCat has experienced membership changes and system changes throughout the last 20 years, and remains committed to connecting our member libraries to strengthen communities in the coming years.
