Alert: Sierra Issues - Resolved

Submitted by Shelby O'Hara on

11/3 6:55pm - Innovative believes that they have found the root cause of the problem and corrected it. PrairieCat staff ran through several circ functions and it does appear to be working. Please go ahead and resume using Sierra.

If you have any issues, please put in a help desk ticket.

11/3 5:28pm - Innovative has brought in several additional teams/depts. to try and determine how to resolve the issues with Sierra. They are still unsure of when it will be fixed.

For those who are interested, the root cause of the problem has been a crawler attack. Crawlers attacks use untargeted bots to run an excessive number of requests against our servers, overloading the internal connections between our servers. While this did cause some slowdown while logging in to Sierra, running searches, loading patron records, etc. the major issue began when Sierra attempted to write to the database. The congestion caused by the crawler queries meant that the database server was unable to write any of the transactions that was sent to it by Sierra, so Sierra locked itself while waiting for a response.

11/3 1:45pm - Innovative is currently trouble-shooting the current issues with Sierra and have asked that while the system is having trouble, please stay logged out of Sierra. Once they give the all clear we will be able to log back in. They are reporting a continuing series of attacks against the server, in spite of their steps to mitigate them. They do not have an estimate on when the problem will be resolved. Please refrain from logging into Sierra for the time being.
