PrairieCat Sierra Cataloging Item Entry Class

Who should attend: Fully Participating, Basic Online & Union List library staff

Completing Sierra Essentials is a prerequisite for all other Sierra training classes. Taught via GoToTraining  (web meeting software) 

This class is designed to provide staff of PrairieCat libraries with a basic understanding of the capabilities of the Cataloging module as well as an overview of navigating through the cataloging functionality in the Sierra client. Topics include creating, editing, and removing item records. Basic matching of bibliographic records will also be covered.

This class is the first step towards barcode certification for PrairieCat. Once this class is completed, a temporary named login will be assigned to the staff member which is valid for six months. Once the Barcode Certification test is passed, the named login will be made permanent

March Long Intransit items

The March 2017 Long Intransit listing is now available in the Statistics & Reports section of the Support Site. The report contains your items that have been Intransit from 2013 to February 1, 2017. There are 1123 items on the report for this month, a DECREASE from 1250 items on the February report. Great job!!

File statistics:

308 new items in transit, compared to 273 new items on the last report.

78 of the 273 new items from the last report are still listed.

21 items remain Intransit from the 2013, SAME last month.

59 items remain Intransit from 2014, SAME last month.

186 items remain Intransit from 2015, DOWN 19 from 205 last month.

548 items remain Intransit from 2016, DOWN 471 from 965 last month.

308 items are Intransit for 2017

When you find an item on this list, check it in in Sierra to remove the Intransit Status. If you do not find the item, you could:

  • contact the sending library to see if the item might have been shelved at their library?
  • post a message to the PrairieCat Circulation and Union List mailing lists to ask others to check their shelves in the event the item was incorrectly delivered and shelved without being checked in. In your email include the author, title, your call number, your item barcode number and the name of a contact at your library if there are questions. Patron Code 4 - New value added

The following value has been added to the Patron Code 4 dropdown listing. This new code will display the next time you log into Sierra.

The Patron Code 4 is an optional fixed field used to track geography or home library for non-PC reciprocal borrowers.


You can download a listing of the PCode 4 values (in Excel and PDF) by navigating on the Support Site to Resources>Circulation> and then looking in the Code Lists section on the page.

PrairieCat Standing Committee Restructuring Overview

The Administrative Council approved restructuring of the PrairieCat standing committees at their February 2017 meeting. Bylaws changes to reflect a new structure for the Circulation Users Group, the Technical Services Users Group, the Training Committee and a new Technology Users Group will be presented at the April 2017 Delegates Assembly for approval. PrairieCat is also instituting regional Member Update meetings to be held twice a year in seven locations across PrairieCat.  Read more about these changes in the attached overview document

PrairieCat Launches New Emergency Notification Tool!!

Please Act Now & Stay in the Know!

 Our current PrairieCat emergency notification tool, PC Chat, is being replaced. The new product is called NetSupport Notify, or in short, NSN.

 NSN will be PrairieCat’s staff emergency broadcasting tool.  PrairieCat staff will use this tool to send out emergency messages that pertain to system issues/outages that could affect multiple locations.

 April 15, 2017 is the date we will shut down PC Chat. Please have NSN installed by then on any workstation that has Sierra installed, so all staff can be informed of any critical PrairieCat issue.
